Why Everyone Needs A Coach

Since I got started with a film story in last week’s post, I thought I’d continue with another one from Grey Gardens.  This one’s about Drew Barrymore.

It was almost at the end of filming Grey Gardens and I was sitting in my tiny office when Drew burst into the room, in tears, and asked if she could use my phone.  Of course I said yes….

The Costume Designer and I could hear her wailing and crying on the phone and we were really concerned…we had no idea what had happened.

Next thing you know, the Director comes storming into our room, steam coming out of his ears, looking for Drew.  The Designer took him outside to calm him down and find out what was going on.  Meanwhile, Drew was still on the phone in my office, door closed and crying.

Oh my!

As it turned out, the Director had casually mentioned on set that she would have to work for 2 more days to finish the filming (maybe even over the weekend).   She had had an extremely difficult time all through the show.  It was her first “serious” role and she had been under a lot of pressure (mostly self-inflicted actually) to do a really good job in this role.

Finally, the door opened and out came Drew – with a big smile on her face.   She had been speaking with her manager and she was kind of laughing too.  

She told us her manager was absolutely brilliant, had listened to her whining and sobbing…and then promptly told her to stop crying and get on with it.  What was being asked wasn’t such a big deal, especially after everything she’d dealt with so far, this was a minor request.   

Suck it up, buttercup.

Sometimes life is rough, your business is rough and it’s hard to see the solution for yourself.  You’re anxious, expectations are high and some people are really difficult to deal with.   But when you have a coach (or in Drew’s case a manager) you’ve got the support, the feedback and the person who actually believes in you even when you might not believe in yourself.   Not your cosmic cheerleader, but someone who knows that you’re stronger than you believe you are in a difficult moment.  

Just don’t expect every conversation to be “nice” because sometimes what you need to hear is to stop complaining and get on with what you want to do.  Suck it up, buttercup, so to speak.
